Football star' Colin Kaepernick 'gets Time cover after controversial national anthem protest

Controversial football star Colin Kaepernick has just won the fight he started. His  national anthem protest has landed the San Francisco 49ers quarterback on the cover of Time magazine.

His decision not to stand for The Star-Spangled Banner before games in protest of racial and social inequality and police brutality has fueled debate in the US sports world and beyond.

 TMZ reported  that Kaepernick earned his way onto their cover, which was released on Wednesday showing him kneeling in uniform in a photograph captioned 'The Perilous Fight'. 

The photo is from one of his previous protests on the field and the cover words note his protest has fueled 'debate about privilege, pride and patriotism'.

Time said he was chosen for the cover story because he was the 'obvious choice' after the protest he sparked has become so widespread, 'from the rest of the NFL to high schools and colleges across the country.

According to the magazine the  goal of the shoot was to  explore the nationwide debate happening around national anthem protests. The cover release comes a day after Kaepernick revealed he had received death threats from critics who believe the 28-year-old's protest is disrespectful. He stressed that he had thought hard about the backlash beofre he embarked on his protest.

On Wednesday, the entire Indiana Fever team kneeled during the anthem before their knock-out WNBA playoff game against Phoenix.
