'Shekau' Boko Haram commander fatally injured

Reports have been circulating by the Nigerian Army that the leader of the Boko Haram sect Abubakar Shekau was struck in an airstrike and sustained serious injuries.

The tweet by the Nigerian Army is yet to be verified. It can be recalled that for years Shekau's death has been circulating after which he sends a video message to rebuff such claims Punch reports.

 Recently,  BokoHaram pledged allegiance to ISIS. Shekau who has led the group since 2009changed the group's official name in March 2015 to ISWAP(Islamic State West Africa Province.AAnd has since been replaced by Abu Musab al - Barnawi who was reportedly the group's spokesman.

Shekau however denounced the appointment claiming he was deceived by ISIS. This statement suggested a split in the group's leadership.

There have also been reported conflicts in its with ISIS, specifically over its use of child suicide bombers and penchant for attacking venues used by other Muslims.

Although, ISIS itself has killed hundreds of Sunni Muslims and struck prominent Muslim holy sites, such as the Medina mosque in Saudi Arabia that is believed to house Muhammad’s tomb.
